The 90s. I miss it. A lot of good music came out in this decade, especially in the beginning of the decade. A lot of quality tracks in many different genres that still get the respect they deserve today when played for crowds, young and old. There is no doubt that there are some low quality tracks that are really cheesy, but for someone like me, they just bring back some great memories of being young. In the days when it was easy to have fun and not have to worry about money, health, or any of that adult mumbo jumbo.

This brings us to the theme of this mix. 90s club music, including house, dance-pop, eurodance, hip house, and more. As cheesy as some of this stuff is, especially to the teens of today, it was fucking great to us, just like the music of our predecessors was to them. None of the music was threatening or too sexual, just innocent lyrics about dancing and love that could only do a few things, make you happy, put a cheese on your face, and make you want to dance all night long.

Enjoy.

Damn, I got a shitload of vol. 1s up on this blog. I need to start making vol. 2s, or better yet, vol. 3s to be one step ahead of myself, haha j/p. This mix is actually a beginning for mixes that highlight my favorite regions in music. Philly is obviously one of them, but I also dig a lot of stuff from Oakland, Houston, New York, and so on. So let’s fire it up with Philly.

Ahhhh, Philly. I love Philly. It’s chill and beautiful like San Francisco but the city has way more history and tradition going on that has way more to offer than tourist photo ops. I hate Philly. I hate that people do not care about the homeless. I hate that a lot of the people are hella rude and don’t give a fuck about anyone except themselves, the Eagles, the Phillies, the Flyers, and the 76ers. Philly scares me. Philly is fucking grimy and I don’t feel like I can turn a corner without looking over my shoulder twice. People don’t give a fuck about authority. People smoke on subway platforms like its an everyday thing while in LA and SF we sneak in bites of our breakfast burritos on our way to work. Almost every neighborhood outside of the Centre City is hood. Rappers claiming north and south Philly, where the fuck are we supposed to go?

All in all, I liked Philly. I liked the history. I liked the Universities. I liked the weather (it snowed when I was there). I liked the transit system. I like the music and in the end that’s all that matters.

Peace. Enjoy.

I fucking love Venice Beach. Yeah, its true that most of the crap on the walk sucks and you eventually see the same type of each vendor about 100 times as you walk up and down the concrete road, but don’t let that deter you from loving Venice like I do. If I were to pick a place to go on a weekend to just chill and be entertained, I choose Venice. Here some things you can enjoy at your day at Venice Beach.

1. The Beach: You don’t have to swim but there is a lot of view to take in.
2. Watching Games: You can sit back and relax as you watch basketball, tennis, weightlifting (if that’s how you get your kicks), and my favorite hand ball, played like racquetball, but just as intense.
3. Play games: You don’t just have to watch, Venice Beach is a LA recreational area meaning all are welcome.
4. Skate Park: A nice open skate are including ledges, quarter pipe, rails, and random trash cans to maneuver across. Not a bad idea to just watch as well.
5. Get active: You can run, bike, roller skate, and more here.
6. Enjoy the arts and entertainment: There is everything from lame to exciting showcases of art and entertainment.
7. Shop for Crap, Eat Crap: Not what I really go to Venice for.
8. Venice Beach Nirvana: Sit back and enjoy it all, watch sports, people, and the ocean, play a few games, shop, eat, skate, take photos, do it all.

When I go to Venice Beach I usually notice the strange blends of music that go perfectly along with the strange blend of people. Music is loungy but at the same time islandish but at the same time futuristic with a little bit of hip hop for flavor. With that observation from my many journeys to Venice Beach, I give you a selection that represents the weird characters, homeless, hipsters, locals, yuppies, gypsies, rhythmic roller skaters, skaters, ballers, tourists, thieves, and boys in blue that all choose to share this hell of a place. Check it!

BTW…this was going to be called Flino at first, representing the imaginary love child between LinoType and Flying Lotus. Problem is that the mix turned into a whole different animal. I claim that LinoType is Flying Lotus’ number one fan since I saw him drop a mix with something like 5 Flying Lotus songs in a row. Its okay though cause he claims I once played 5 DJ Quik songs in a row at the USC NYE mansion party back in the 07-08 transition…didn’t happen dawg, I remember 2. So, this mix was born out of influences by LinoType and Flying Lotus and mutated into a representation of Venice Beach (to me at least).

P.S. 30 minute mix Lino, what you got to say now?!

I fucking love hip hop! Since the days of my youth when I was listening to Arrested Development and Digable Planets alongside Das Efx and Boogie Down Productions adjacent to NWA and DJ Quik juxtaposed to San Quinn and RBL Posse. I love hip hop in all it’s forms, conscious, clever, gangsta, grimey, dancey, and dumb. It is the only type of music that can make you dance, think, nod your head, two step, fight your enemies, disrespect females, get drunk, and so much more.

Hip hop is so versatile that it has moved beyond its roots in The Bronx to become a large part of many sub-cultures in cities across the globe, touching lives from the poverty strictend in the slums to the rich folks in the hills. I refuse to ever say that hip hop is dead because it is a lifestyle and even though the elements of DJing, breaking, MCing, and tagging have become independent entities, when brought together, the term “the perfect fit” can only explain the outcome.

Hip hop is powerful and it has never been used as a type of propaganda for evil, as believed in the past. Hip hop is positive and those who choose to be a part of hip hop can only receive something positive in return. No matter how bad ass or hardcore hip hop representers come off when they perform, you have to understand that hip hop was born in areas where the only road to success was a competitive nature and that is what fuels the forward progression of the hip hop movement, giving you something greater as time goes on. I imagine the hip hop kid of the future will be able to rhyme in several languages in one freestyle, scratch, do a head spin, and drop a piece all at the same time. We ain’t prepared for what hip hop has to offer in 2109.

Sorry, the mix is early but I just couldn’t wait! Enjoy…

Happy Birthday to Me!

I always wanted to put together a neo-soul mix but I just never got around to it. With dope neo-soul songs, as well as songs from other genres that just seem to fit the mood, this is what I put together. Check parts 1 & 2. Thanks to DJ Siik, DJ Linotype, DJ Ocir and endless list of music blogs for some of the tracks and remixes that helped bring this all together. Sorry for the excess 4Hero, but they just make good music…
