The Come Up Crew Podcast Vol. 5: Ignant as Ever (Click to download)

For this special Come Up Podcast edition, we have Siik and myself, LinoType, coming through on both hosting and music duties. This will mark my first appearanceon the podcast and I have to say it’s been long overdue. Please excuse all the fumbled words and soft vocals – there was only one mic and it was all one take. It’s better that way.

Siik describes his mix as ignant. “Put it in your car and wreck your subs”, he recommends. As for mine, it’s all Biggie. His movie just came out (it was aiight), and I felt I had to share my take on his legendary catalog. And for my money (and Siik’s), he is the greatest rapper to ever touch a microphone.

New mix for that ass!!! I have been trying to pump out as many mixtapes as possible so you guys always have something to listen to in your ipods, jeeps, and boom boxes while you are working out, working, or driving.

I have been staying up to about 1AM to 4AM for the last week for some reason. But instead of letting the pre-insomnia drive me crazy, I decided to be more proactive with that time. I hit the turntables. I found out that I am way more creative and my mind is much clearer in the late late late hours of the night. I never get tired of mixing like I may do in the day cause I am pretty much mixing until I get tired enough to pass out.

The routine goes like this:

1. Try to sleep
2. Get up cause I can’t sleep and go watch Adult Swim
3. Get bored with cartoons and head to my mix lounge
4. Prepare a lineup that may take me 1-3 hours
5. Record the mix the next day

I call this mix the Feelin It Mix since it was put together while I was feelin it in the wee hours of the night. I stuck to one folder which was packed with songs I downloaded from music blogs. So maybe we can call it the Music Blog Mayhem Mix (kind of whack name). I try to just build on top of each proceeding song with something that I felt that fit right even if the genre doesn’t match. So be prepared for hip hop, soul, neo-soul, disco, and so on…

From these stats I found out that posting on facebook is the way to go in getting people to your blog, especially if you got friends with hella friends that recommend your post to others. Case in point, after I posted my “downtempo” mix, LinoType suggested it on facebook and I got a huge amount of hits that day and its popularity has slowly decreased. Big ups to Mr. Manansala for that one. Being as specific as possible with tags can also help. People also like to hear music and look at pictures, but I believe people want to hear the story behind the mixes and photos where they may have the opportunity to walk in your shoes or see through your eyes. And lastly, people want to hear your opinions about music, events, activities, places, and so on, so they can either justify their feelings about something or find someone to disagree with about something. It’s only human…I’m just trying my best to feed the masses.

Wrap Up:
I actually got exicted about doing this mix and I had too much. So that is why I added the power mix so I could put it all out there. I had a lot of fun making this mix and my girlfriend was also happy to hear those Bay tracks again after all this time.

I stayed up until 4AM last night finishing the podcast after recording the vocals at Dumlao’s pad between 9:30P and 11:30P but I am very happy with the result. I actually had to add a last minute San Quinn track this morning after I got it from Dex Beats so I could lace y’all with new shit and put you on to Dex Beats’ work. The podcasts and power mixes are just going to get better and better from here on and most importantly our creativity will continue to grow and become more interesting to more people.

Keep following The Come Up Crew Podcast as we give you guys mixes highlighting the music of different regions, artist spotlights, and a let’s not forget all the other genres we will be touching, RnB, electro, B’More, Funk, Soul, house, downtempo, and more. Our first podcast topic request was a “sample vs. sampled” mix. This means we will be mixing tracks together like Ice Cube’s “Today was a Good Day” with Isley Brother’s “Footsteps in the Dark.” Look foward to that one.

I met DJ Siik at the May 2008 Come Up party. This San Fernando Valley kid’s mixes was real clean and his music selection was immaculate. His mixes sounded like they were meant to be together.

DJ Siik, Unknown Photographer

DJ Siik, Unknown Photographer

Getting to know Siik more I found out that he is still a beginner on turntables and that he never really touched any until that day at The Come Up. That amazed me because he just picked it up real quick and his mixes are hella clean. Later I got to see him mix in some acapellas for a 4×4 set with Mike Deuce and he even had great timing, which can take other DJs years to master. He is a natural and with a few more years on turntables he will become one of the siikest in the business.

Siik also has a blog that is very successful and has a huge following. He got a lot of mixes up there as well as remixes that sometimes seem to be a better fit to the song than the original track. Keep up with DJ Siik at www.siik.org and download his mixes and remixes.

If you are in Honolulu, Hawaii, pick up Siik’s mixtape “In Between” at In4mation.

No more sleeping on DJ Siik. Kid is dope…

This was my first time doing a whole set at Tribal Cafe’s Diggin Sunday which goes down every third Sunday of the month in Historic Filipinotown. Although there are themes for each session, I could not find any current information about what kind of music to play. I created a set with the understanding that the session is on more of a positive vibe. I chose more songs that were soulful and positive. But without Serato my selection is limited. I have almost a thousand records but most of it doesn’t work at Diggin Sunday.

Diggin Sunday Official Flyer

Diggin Sunday Official Flyer

After completing my set I found out that the theme was positive music and that my set worked. The only thing is that there was a little too much bad language in my set and their was a pre-teen girl at the cafe sitting right in front of the speaker doing her homework. But in the end there were no complaints.

I immediately recorded the mix when I got home and here it is for your enjoyment:
