I put this mix together for the new pre-party The Come Up Crew is trying to build at Lost Souls Cafe in Downtown LA. I believe it will be going down every 3rd Saturday of the month. Beer, wine, food, shakes, and coffee will be available for all patrons to enjoy while they listen to the great music the Come Up Crew pumps out…what a whack plug.

So the mix is chill…I bring in a shitload of genres together that I felt might help one chill. Hip Hop, Indie, RnB, Neo-Soul, Soul, Funk, Disco, Dub, and so on. Check ‘er out.

This 30 minute set was created for a slot that preceded Mr. Choc (Beat Junkies) and eventually DJ Nu-Mark (Jurassic 5), who were guest DJs at The Come Up 1 year anniversary at the Terrace in Pasadena. And in the end, Mr. Choc and DJ Nu-Mark knew me by name, but not necessarily in a good way. They know “Spingineer” as the fuck that played electro on a night where the headliners don’t really fuck with that style of music. So now I am infamous for being an electro loving butty boy for the 12-13 minutes of electro I played that night. This is actually the first time I ever played electro at The Come Up, perfect timing I guess. So listen to the mix, especially the electro part which I call the “career killing piece of crap that no one danced too.” Enjoy.

So although I didn’t really get the respect I hoped for by some of the greatest DJs I ever heard of, I still was loving the crazy sets pumped out by Mr. Choc and DJ Nu-Mark. Shit is burned in my mind for the rest of my life, amazing.

BTW, I am turntable-less at this point after donating my turntables to Tiny Toones Cambodia at the Los Angeles leg of the world tour on Sunday, May 3rd, 2009. It was a cool event, the kids were very talented, and I feel confident my turntables, mixer, and other equipment will be put to good use and help save lives.

Here is a photo mosaic of the event from :

I fucking love hip hop! Since the days of my youth when I was listening to Arrested Development and Digable Planets alongside Das Efx and Boogie Down Productions adjacent to NWA and DJ Quik juxtaposed to San Quinn and RBL Posse. I love hip hop in all it’s forms, conscious, clever, gangsta, grimey, dancey, and dumb. It is the only type of music that can make you dance, think, nod your head, two step, fight your enemies, disrespect females, get drunk, and so much more.

Hip hop is so versatile that it has moved beyond its roots in The Bronx to become a large part of many sub-cultures in cities across the globe, touching lives from the poverty strictend in the slums to the rich folks in the hills. I refuse to ever say that hip hop is dead because it is a lifestyle and even though the elements of DJing, breaking, MCing, and tagging have become independent entities, when brought together, the term “the perfect fit” can only explain the outcome.

Hip hop is powerful and it has never been used as a type of propaganda for evil, as believed in the past. Hip hop is positive and those who choose to be a part of hip hop can only receive something positive in return. No matter how bad ass or hardcore hip hop representers come off when they perform, you have to understand that hip hop was born in areas where the only road to success was a competitive nature and that is what fuels the forward progression of the hip hop movement, giving you something greater as time goes on. I imagine the hip hop kid of the future will be able to rhyme in several languages in one freestyle, scratch, do a head spin, and drop a piece all at the same time. We ain’t prepared for what hip hop has to offer in 2109.

Sorry, the mix is early but I just couldn’t wait! Enjoy…

Happy Birthday to Me!

I always wanted to put together a neo-soul mix but I just never got around to it. With dope neo-soul songs, as well as songs from other genres that just seem to fit the mood, this is what I put together. Check parts 1 & 2. Thanks to DJ Siik, DJ Linotype, DJ Ocir and endless list of music blogs for some of the tracks and remixes that helped bring this all together. Sorry for the excess 4Hero, but they just make good music…

My friend Marco told me about the Locals Only Common show they advertised on NBC, so I went to the NBC Los Angeles website and searched Common. I found the entry form which asked for my email, name, and a code word for entry. After entering the info, I was looking at a page with 4 pictures of locations in LA. I guess this was too ensure that only locals would go to this show. It was a good idea but I wasn’t sure on one waterfront location. I thought it could be a number of places, including Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, or Newport Beach. After looking closer at the small picture, I found out it was Long Beach after spotting the ferris wheel in the background.

The show was at a secret location that wasn’t disclosed to us until the day of the show. It was close to 6th and Santa Fe by the LA River at an events building. Trisha and I met up with Mitchel (Dumlao), Mike (Mike Deuce), and Marco (Speezee). The wait to get in was a good 20-25 minutes. It was nice inside and the lighting was good. I got a beer and cocktail at the bar and it came out to $14. We had to listen to this Will.I.AM looking DJ that was off point more than on point with his mixing and timing. He seemed to love to slam into the next song in the middle of versus which bothered the shit out of me. He was a good performer though as far as scratching and controlling the crowd on the mic. I will give him that.

Common came on at 10:30 and did a half hour show. Most of the songs were those straight commercial/girl loving tracks. Here are some examples of tracks he performed:

Make My Day (Off the new album)
Testify
Love Is
Come Close (Where he brought a girl up on stage to rap to her, WTF??, corny!!)
The Light
Go (I think)
The People
Universal Mind Control

I like all of these songs but I didn’t hear any of the songs I was hoping to hear which pissed me off a little bit. These are the songs I wanted to hear:

I Used to Love H.E.R.
Nuthin to Do
Thisisme
Resurrection
Breaker 1/9
Reminding Me (Of Sef)
6th Sense
Funky 4 U
Dooinit

But I guess NBC would never let him play those tracks. Maybe I have to see him live at a real concert or at a hip hop show on the straight underground tip. I’ll tell you one thing, the show made me want to listen to Common’s old stuff. When he was fucking dope and his rhymes were hard. I love Common’s music no matter what, but I guess the lack of diversity of songs at the show turned me off. But you know what they say…beggers can’t be choosers. I am just happy I got to see Common Sense for free.
