I have been wanting to make this mix for about 9 months ever since I left Phnom Penh (Cambodia) where my homie Peanut is living/working/inspiring. You see, Peanut is from Tacoma, outside of Seattle and I decided to put this one together for him to hopefully ease the pain of homesickness that he may be having while he is out there dpoing great things with the kids at Tiny Toones Cambodia. Much love Peanut! Keep up the great work.
Before this mix, the only Seattle hip hop artists/producers I knew of were Blue Scholars, Common Market, and Jake One. I probably knew more grunge bands from Seattle than anything else. After doing a lot of research and listening to a lot of Seatle artists, I was completely amazed at how many quality hip hop artists there are in Seattle. It is pretty much the full spectrum of hip hop, from hardcore rap from artists such as Grayskul, who sound similar to Jedi Mind Tricks, to conscious rap from artists such as the Blue Scholars, who have also had success crossing over into the mainstream.
From listening to tracks from the region and reading up on Seattle hip hop, I was put on to a few albums that displayed Seattle hip hop in its early stages, including “14 Fathoms Deep,” “Classic Elements,” “Do The Math,” and “Untranslated Prescriptions.” These albums are pretty raw and I suggest everyone pick them up. At this point I feel like I have a good understanding of Seattle hip hop from the mid-1990s to the present. I have truely become a fan and will continue to keep my ears open to the great music coming out of Seattle.
Enjoy!
